Domestic abuse research for LAP 5

March 25, 2011

Domestic abuse, also call domestic violence is violance including  physical aggression, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, controlling, stalking, etc. Domestic abuse can happen to everyone. It happens most to the women. For every ten women, there are six women are victims of domestic abuse.

If, unfortunately, you had been domestic abused by someone, here is what you should do. You must get help. If you are injured after an attack of domestic abuse, you have to get medical treatment as soon as possible. Also, telling someone else about it is a way to get help. Telling some one you can trust and tell them exactly what happened is a way of breaking out of suffering in silence.

According to the statistics concerning domestic abuse in Philadelphia, the number of homicides from domestic abuse hit 35 in 2009, a 67 percent increase over 2008, which means the  rates of domestic abuse in Philadelphia have risen and across the nation. In fact, data indicate that domestic violence had been falling in the 15 years before the recession took hold in 2009. In 2010, the number of homicides from domestic abuse remains pretty much the same as in 2009.

The experts say that domestic abuses are on the rise. “There needs to be a very tightly woven system of safety and support. Right now, there’s a lot of holes in that fabric,” said Candace Waldron, executive director of Help for Abused Women and their Children. “It’s devastating to do this work and see all these homicides.” In this quote it says the issues of domestic abuses are becoming really serious right now. We need to protect ourselves well and know the signs of domestic abuse, ask for help if you need it.

If necessary, you can call the helpline 1-888-743-5754 for assistances. Other than that, you can tell someone that you trust or report your issue to the police. These are some ways that you can get help in.

Alternative Project for Lap4

During the Holocaust, many innocent children had been suffered from the Germany for being Jews. Some of the them were lucky and survived from this big discrimination, but some were not that lucky, who died from it. In the next paragraph, I’ll talk about the two tragic children who had suffered through the Holocaust.

The two children that I’m going to talk about are Anne Frank and Elie Wiesel. These two kids were both living during the Holocaust, and they received the similar treatments from the Germans as a Jew. Unfortunately, unlike Anne Frank, Elie Wiesel didn’t survive from it.

Although they were not in the same family, they had somethings in common. The first one is that, apparently they both were Jews. And they both had one sister in their own families. Also, they were both born in educated families.

The things that they had in difference were that Anne Frank was hiding in the secret building during the Holocaust, but Elie Wiesel was suffer suffering in a prison camp. Also, Anne Frank and her family can’t talk out loud during day times because others will notice them if they do. For Elie Wiesel, he was even worse than Anne Frank, he was tortured beaten and starved for long time before he could get his next meal. But the most important difference was that, Anne Frank was with her family while Elie Wiesel was by himself. That made a huge difference between them because “family is a haven in a heartless world”. Without his family, it’s really hard for Elie to suffer from all these horrible things. I think that’s the reason why Anne Frank had survived from the Holocaust.

LAP 3: Study about Holocaust

November 15, 2010

So far I have learned that how the Germany from having negative speech about the Jews to finally exterminate them all and why they did that. What I found that is compelling is that the way the Germany exterminate the Jews step by step. There are a few topics or questions that I want to further investigate. One is that I want to know if there is an author who had been going through the Holocaust and wrote a book or books about it, the most importantly is that the person is still alive, so he can talk about his past. Another question I want to further investigate is that why the Jews didn’t fight the Germany back since there were like six millions of them instead of letting the Germany exterminate them. Also I want to know that how the Jews’ lives were like.

After reviewing the major project choices for this LAP, I found that to write a fictional journal is interesting. The first step I need to do is to think about the theme of the story. The second step is to make a draft. The third step is to correct the mistakes or grammar. The final step is to start the writing.

After viewing the The Pianist, I felt both sad and angry. I was sad because the Jews were treated badly by the Germany. And I felt angry because the Germany is cruel and crazy that they did whatever they wanted to the Jews. Although this film is violence and bloody, but that is a real reflection about what the Germany really did. The movie is really touching for some reasons.

The Nazis took steps to persecute the Jews in Poland. The first step they did was that they spread lies about Jewish people. The next step they did was to stop the Jewish sharing the public places such as the restaurant. And then they started discriminating the Jewish people, they kicked them out of the town and made them lived in where were ordered for Jews to live. The forth step was that they started the physical attack to the Jews, they started killing the Jews who didn’t follow them or tried to run away, even kids got killed. The final step, they had extermination to the Jews, they started the Holocaust.

I think the Szpilman identifies himself primarily as a Jew because he tried to save his family as a Jew not a musician.

Article Of The Week:The Future of the Electric Car(Sep 27th)

September 28, 2010

I might be interested in buying an electric car.The reason that i say “might” is because there are a lot of uncertainties. For example, although an electric car is greener than a gas-powered car,but the prices may not be affordable for everyone. Also it takes a long time to recharge it.However,as the technology improves, the costs of the car and the time of charging the car may be increased.

I dont think the emergence of electric cars is a “false dawn”because it seems like the electric cars are really going to be a revolution of auto industry. It has a lot of advantages than the gas-powered cars such as it uses eletricity instead of gas,it can help protect the enviroment. Thus all the big car companies are planing to make some electric cars and market them.

I think the Congress should mandate “vroomtones”because the electric cars are too quiet.Sometimes if a careless person walking without seeing the car is coming to him,a vroomtones may remind him that a car is coming so he wont get hit by the car.So a car runs silently is not always a good thing.

“Where I am from” poem

September 23, 2010

<<Where I am from>>

I am from high buildings and mansions,

from bricks and cement.

I am from children’s carnie,

from slides and swings.

I am from traditional ceremany,

from Lunar New Year and Mid-autumn Festival.

I am from noiseless village and bustling city,

from fresh air and lively night market.

In my room there is a photo album,

that contains every pieces of me.

I am from those moment,

stand up after i fall down,

keep walking toward without stopping.
